A Step-by-Step Guide to Packing Dishes

The kitchen is one of the most used rooms in the house. Because of this, it is often the last room that gets packed up ahead of a move. Even though the kitchen might be packed up last, it is still important that it is packed up correctly. Dishes, for example, are extremely fragile and can break if not packed correctly. Are you looking for tips for packing dishes? Read below!

How to Pack Plates, Bowls and Dishes in 7 Easy-to-Follow Steps

  • Step 1: Wash the dishes

First, wash all dishes and dinnerware pieces you are planning on moving and storing. While this is a smart thing to do regardless of if you plan on getting a storage unit, it is essential if you’ll be storing the dishes.

  • Step 2: Reinforce the boxes

If you do not have a box that is designed specifically to move dishes, then a normal cardboard box will work. When moving heavy items like dishes, it is a good idea to reinforce the seams of the boxes. Tape over the bottom seams of the boxes with masking tape to keep heavy items from breaking out of the bottom.

  • Step 3: Add cushion to the bottom of the box

While ideally the boxes will not get bumped or jostled around, that isn’t necessarily reality. To protect the dishes from damage, crumple up packing paper and place it in the bottom of the box. This will help to cushion the dishes in case they get bumped.

  • Step 4: Wrap the dishes in packing paper

When moving dishes, you really can’t use too much packing paper. Wrap each dinnerware item with packing paper to protect it during the move. If the paper is loose, secure it with tape.

  • Step 5: Pack heaviest to lightest

Always place the heaviest items in the boxes first and the lighter items on top. This will prevent your smaller, more fragile items from getting broken.

  • Step 6: Add additional protection for the top of the boxes

If there is space between the dishes and the top of the box, add crumpled up paper to cushion the top of the box. This will prevent the dishes from getting jostled around during transportation.

  • Step 7: Use a climate controlled storage unit

If you’re storing dishes, always use a climate controlled storage unit. Over time, fluctuations in temperature can damage the dinnerware. A climate controlled storage unit will protect the dinnerware from fluctuations in temperature.
